You may be wondering why you still feel the urge to put on a jacket in August here in Thurston County.Many people I talk to say this is unusually cold for this time of year, so I did a bit of digging.Apparently, the temperatures remain fairly consistent for this time of year depending on if we are in an El Nino or La Nina cycle. El Nino tends to bring higher than average winter and springs, and La Nina brings in lower than average winter and spring temperatures.Summers are still a bit of a wild card, but meteorologists predict that this year will be average to above average.
We are just heading into the warmest part of the year, August and September.You can expect little, if any, rain and temperatures warm enough to at least pull out those shorts from moth balls.Swimming is still ify in the Pacific Northwest, but you can certainly hit the beaches for a little wet suit surfing.Try Westport’s Steepwater Surfshop for rentals on surfing equipment.
Mornings are still going to be a touch nippy, and you may want to keep out a sweater, but the afternoons are glorious in the Pacific Northwest.Take the time to get out on the back patio with the grill and a lawn chair.By October we will see rain breaking up our sunny revelry.So, soak up the vitamin D while it is available.
