*Sigh* It's coming to the end of a really fun season of little farmers' markets dotting the landscape from Tenino to Tumwater, Lacey to Olympia. The last weekend in October marks the last weekend of the Tumwatermarket, and with that, we just have the Olympia market left to remind of us the beautiful harvest from summer.
Farmers' markets have become central to the small-town experience in the last ten years.More and more small farmers are finding a niche in local markets with low-cost vending fees and ease of transportation for their products to and from the farm.Today's high-tech, mobile community is slow to remember the old-time trade days where locals could come together to exchange ideas, swap products and buy fresh produce from neighboring farms. But, despite the dependency on large food stores, more and more people are finding the connection to the local farm through small markets like the ones in Tenino and Tumwater.Olympia's Farmers market is still a shining jewel in the Puget Sound region mirroring a kind of Renaissance Fair feel along with the advantage of dozens of Washington State vendors bringing everything from hand-spun yarns to honey and East Washington apples.
If you want a taste of the best of what the Puget Sound region has to offer, best get out to the Olympia market before it, too, closes shop for the season. Hours are Saturday and Sunday through November and December from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. And, next year, make it a point to frequent your local farmers' market in support of small farmers and craftsmen from your region.
