The Yelm Farmers Market has been a great boost to the area this summer, but they are winding down on their produce and products, so they will be closing September 30th instead of October 28th.For an experimental first year, I think the market was a great success.Learning the lessons from this past season, I hope the market will be open more days next year.
The city of Yelm is in the process of a total makeover on the City Park which will include a community center with commercial kitchen, new pavilions and more open space to hold events. Most of the construction will begin next spring/summer, so the farmer’s market location will be in flux as well. What we have learned is that the Farmers Market is a much needed addition to the community and the support of our local farmers. We will be sad to see them go, but we know that next year will bring the promise of fresh fruits, veggies and meats along with many other new local farm vendors to our town.
The last market day, September 30th is Cultural Heritage Explosion. The Market website is calling for submissions of local historical photos, family stories and/or pictures about Yelm and the surrounding communities. They are also hosting a kids’ art contest with cash prizes. When you arrive at the market, there will be a storyteller’s booth that will have tables and chairs for people to bring their photo albums and stories about the area to share with the community. It’s informal, but a great way to meet your neighbors and share what brought your family to Yelm and to see how far we’ve come as a community. What a great way to end the season!
