When I became a homeowner many years ago, I had no idea how often I should service my furnace. I thought I was being pro-active when I bought a Groupon that advertised $49 for a furnace service. My unit was working fine, but had not been cleaned for years. As soon as my furnace was serviced, it stopped working. The "Company" said it would cost $10,000 for a new unit. I had 2 other companies come out and give me quotes to fix. Those quotes ranged from $5,000-$10,000.
Later, while at a home inspection, a client referred me to Chuck at Freedom Heating & Air. I called him to get one last quote, and boy, I am glad I did. Chuck listened to us, had a sixth sense about something, and went to take a look. Turns out, the "Company" I hired via groupon left my Freon uncapped causing it to drain out. Chuck checked the fuses, put some freon into our heat pump, and fired it right up. Success!!! Total Bill? Under $300. He told us that this should last another 4-5 years.
Lesson I learned: Make sure you get a referral from a good source. I will only use Chuck at Freedom Air. http://freedomheating-ac.com/ Last lesson: If your furnace is in a pretty clean enviornment then you should have your furnace serviced every 2-3 years.
