Yelm Dollars for Scholars Rocks

Yelm Dollars for Scholars Rocks

Few organizations work harder for their cause than the Yelm chapter of Dollars for Scholars.  Giving away over $100,000 each year to area youth for college, this group packs a large community punch.  In today's economy, skills and education are more than a luxury; they are a survival tool.  It is wonderful that citizens and businesses in Yelm recognize the importance of educating our youth to such a high degree.  The organization actually began over 30 years ago with a few people who wanted to scrape together some money to help a few students towards their college fund.  Now the group has joined forces with the nationwide organization of Dollars for Scholars, which has boosted their potential for helping more kids find their way to higher education.

Did you know that several colleges in Washington State offer matching funds through the Dollars for Scholars program?  So, the impact of a small community banding together and donating their time and money to send Yelm youth to college is multiplied through this program.

Just how involved are people in Dollars for Scholars?

-        Many teachers and school administration staff automatically deduct a portion of their paycheck to the organization.

-        Local restaurants donate their receipts for the Taste of the Prairie event and auction each spring..

-        Elementary Schools in Yelm participate in pennies for scholars, a contest to see which class will donate the most change towards the cause.

-        Some people in leadership with Dollars for Scholars continue to donate their time and money to the organization long after their own children have left high school.

-        Some citizens set up memorial funds towards Dollars for Scholars in honor of those who have passed on.

With so many people and businesses participating every area, Yelm's chapter of Dollars for Scholars has a huge reputation for bringing community together in support of a very worthy cause.  If you'd like to learn more about donating, volunteering, or receiving a scholarship for your teen, take a look at the Dollar for Scholars page on the Yelm community school website.
